Our Mission in Brazil
In the early 1960’s, Pope John XXIII asked religious congregations to send at least 1/10th of their personnel to Latin American because of the tremendous needs of this continent. In 1963, the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement arrived in Jataí, Goiás, Brazil.
Jataí, Goiás, Brazil is a municipality in southern Goiás state, Brazil. Its population was 105,402 (2012) in a total area of 7,174.2 km². Jataí is a major producer of agricultural products, including soybeans, rice, and corn. It has the largest herd of cattle in the state and is a large producer of poultry and swine. In 2000 it was the 6th largest municipality in area in the state.
Throughout the years, the Sisters had been involved in religious education and pastoral ministry in various parishes in the Diocese of Jatai. Currently, we have one retired Sister in Brazil and numerous Associates who carry on our charism and ministry of Franciscan at-one-ment, peace and joy.
Sr. Dolores D’Aloia (from Mechanicville, New York) ~ ministered in Brazil for 52 years. Her missionary experiences have been numerous and most inspiring to many. Sister has recently retired and continues her missionary spirit through prayer and sharing her stories of experiences of her mission work and lived experiences.
In celebration of the life and ministry of Sr. Dolores’ ~ a book has been written by Oníria Guimarães de Oliveira, a native to Rio Verde, Goias.
This book documents the remarkable life of Sr. Dolores’ mission and ministry in Brazil as a Franciscan Sister of the Atonement. The book, containing many photographs from Sister’s life, illustrates her dedication and commitment to her Franciscan-Atonement vocation and way of life. Many testimonies and stories of her experiences in Brazil are included in the book. What a wonderful keepsake for all who know Sr. Dolores, and what a wonderful inspiration for all who are “missionaries” ~ in heart, soul or present involvement.
